Shadow Booskという名称は、書籍の著者とその愛読者を「陰（Shadow）から支える」という意味に由来します。そんなShadow Booksは、次のような課題を解決するために誕生しました。
* 書籍は人類の遺産とも言えるほどの価値を持つのに出版後はあまり有効活用されていない
* 全ての書籍には熱狂的なファンがいるのに、同じ愛読書を持つファンのコミュニティが形成されていない（読者同士の交流が生まれにくい）
* 出版記念イベント以外に、著者と読者のインタラクティブな接点がもっとあっていい
* 電子書籍は普及したものの、まだまだ書籍とデジタルの世界は切り離されている
* 長い時間をかけて執筆をする一方で、著者に収益がほとんど入らない（一般的に著者に入る収益は6\~8%となっている）
* 二次流通市場での転売が一般的となり新書が売れづらくなった（ますます著者に収益が入らない）
Shadow Booksは、ISBNコードという書籍ごとに一意のデータを活用し、それをウォレットアドレスという一意のデジタルデータと紐づけることにより、書籍ごとに熱量の高い読者コミュニティをNFTと共に作り上げます。
また、書籍ごとのNFTから生まれる収益を著者に還元することで、執筆における著者の収益が少ない問題についても解消することを目指しています。
